The team’s four Yak aircraft will be roaring to life again this spring, putting their powerful nine-cylinder radial engines to good use as they thrill audiences with their tight formations, graceful aerobatic manoeuvres and death-defying head to head passes. The UK’s only professional aerobatic team to use nostalgic and powerful Russian Yak aircraft, the lead aircraft is a specially developed two-seater Super Yak 52, modified and fitted with a 400 horsepower engine, as well as the latest GPS systems and gyroscopic gadgets. The team has performed in front of millions, displays at all the major airshows and has been featured on the BBC, ITV, and in the regional press.
The Yakovlevs will also be the only green team on the display circuit. The team was instrumental in developing a new environmentally-friendly smoke oil with Shell – Ondina EL – and has seen to it that many of the main acts on the display circuit are now all using Ondina. The product is food-safe, produces whiter smoke and is better for your aircraft's paintwork, as well as the pilot's lungs! The team will also attempt to offset all their carbon emissions for the coming season, using the GreenFly Initiative and with the help of one of the team’s main partners, Emery Little Insurance, based near Salisbury.
“This is already promising to be a great season,” said Jez Hopkinson, Team Leader. “We have been doing this for ten years now, and are looking forward to another great season of displaying. We also hope to put more schemes in place to make our display as green as possible. And plans are in the works to do something special to celebrate our anniversary!”
