  1. Fare comment it all comes down to money

  2. Hi Roy, I know TD248 very well and used to pass it every morning on my way to college!
Im afraid it all comes down to cost, TD248 is based at Duxford with ARC, for them to come up to display at Rhyl is a 90min round trip plus the display time - at around £2000-2500/hr to fly a privately owned Spitfire you can understand why we have to look at one that is based 10mins flying time away.
With money from Council sources looking to be very restricted in 2011 every penny will count!

  3. Hi With you planning for the 2011 airshow may ask if it would be possible to invite the Spitfire that used to be the gate Guardian at RAF Sealand it is based at Duxford plane number TD248 as it is a local show a great lot of people might not even no that it is back in the air and would remember it at RAF Sealand when they drove past as I did when i was younger.I last saw it fly a while back when my brother peter worked at Sealand camp and he told me that if I went to meat him at the gates of south camp we could be their with the other guests Lord Barry Jones was their when it arrived it did a few fly by's then landed it was wonderful to see it back in the air and would love to see it again.the Spitfire was taken in 1982

  8. Absolutely fantastic show, how can the council think about not doing the show next year, took me back to the halcyon days of Rhyl with visitors pouring into the town.

  11. A group of us from thomaspropertyservices travelled to Rhyl for the day to be welcomed by an impressive display of ariel acrobatics by those famous Red Arrows. And it didn't stop there!! Turns out we were to be entertained all afternoon by a whole host of dare devil ariel display's to which we all thoroughly enjoyed.

    Thank you all so much

I've also included a link to some pictures of the day. Red Arrows Rhyl 2010

  12. We had the BEST family day out in the area in a long while.Events like this are much needed for our area. And also for local business.
Its also about bringing people back into our area to show them that Rhyl is improving and events like this just show the efforts that the council are making to bring back good old Rhyl.
A lot of work went into the day and you could see that and congratulations to all involved....i would be very disappointed and i'm sure lots of others would be too if it wasn't to take place next year.If money needs to be saved I don't think that this is the event to dismiss.

A very BIG critism of the day that did hinder some of the enjoyment and can't believe it was allowed to go on was the fair ground....quad bike music!!! You had paid for somebody to comentate and this was very helpful and interesting but when standing to see the parachutes coming in you couldn't hear a thing about what was happening only the loud fairground music....surely somebody must have noticed this and why they weren't made to switch it off I don't know. People had come there to watch an airshow and we couldn't hear the info because of the noise.I know obviously that people enjoy the fair and its part of the day..but how silly to have them right next to the beach with the music sooo loud we couldn't hear the about the parachutes coming in properly.

Fingers crossed we are having this fantastic show back in 2011...it was the talk of the town

  16. Just to say what a fantastic weekend at the Rhyl air show. Sunday was a fantastic day. Credit to the commentators and the RAF Team young and old for a great day. I hope to see it next year and would be willing to pay at least a £1 to enter to exhibitors arena to fund the shows future years to come. It would be great to see more on the ground from the Air force/exhibitors.Fantastc job..well done...Rhyl came Alive...

  17. sunday was great. a superb family day out . i saw rhyl similar to when i was a child, drawing crowds of people. seeing families with their children on the beach warmed my heart. i understand that it is only one event in the year but how many similar attractions could be brought there. weather is a big factor with any event like this and rhyl was very lucky on sunday. hopefully the event will get bigger and better in the future, with far better viewing positions than southport this could become a major airshow in the uk calendar. i understand there would have to be a cost to the public for this to become bigger and i don't know how it would be made possible to charge but the location is superb. as for the airshow itself and the day , where can you see the red arrows put on a full display for free as well as the other displays. it would be nice to see some heavy metal in the skies,eg tornado, eurofighter etc just for the noise, but the hunter would have done a good job if it was servicable. well done to whoever was responsible for organising you have done rhyl proud and shows a really positive move to improving rhyl as a tourist town. my only negative comment is that coming from mold i only heard from friends (and lots of my friends missed out), about the airshow and maybe better advertising would bring even more people

  18. Thanks for the nice comments - except for 'Keith' who obviously likes silence! It was a pleasure to see how many of you enjoyed the show.

Many of your comments have been taken on board. Saturday was never going to be a big day; Phil W and the 'team' always planned for a Sunday show day to be the highlight of the weekend.

From a commentator's point of view the arrangements this year were 'top notch'! Just one point - I think the speakers could have been spread out more to allow more folk at the eastern and western ends of the prom to hear. As a former show Director of many years, i would have liked to have seen more local organisations, and charities in the trade area, and definitely more Aviation related traders. The RAF display was very good for a first time appearance, and I'm sure they will bring more next year.

DCC and RTC need to set aside a proper budget, and organise a full "Show Committee" to run the event - a team that Phil W. could easily organise with his contacts.

However well done all - this show must grow if it is to succeed and bring Rhyl into the select group of seaside towns that really look after their patrons.

  19. As a visitor from Scotland, I would like to add my voice of appreciation to the many already offered. The show was very good, especially on Sunday. Long may it continue! However, being reliant on Public Transport brought one problem to light. The Arriva buses from Rhuddlan to Rhyl bus station [and return] ran significantly behind schedule, due to road congestion. This was due to at least four concurrent factors,
1] The traffic for the Air Show itself,
    2] The American circus traffic,
3] The Rhyl car boot sale traffic,
4] Road works at St. Asaph.
All this was compounded by a Sunday service still being run despite the extra demand being apparent.
Can I suggest that if this event runs again than a more "joined up" approach may be taken regarding the above.
    Thanks,
    Alan

  20. Can't believe that the Rhyl Air show is under threat of being abolished because of cuts, its one of the best things that has happened to Rhyl, its fantastic and puts Rhyl on the map, lets not loose it.

  21. well done rhyl! the air show was fabulous, a great day out, and free! thankyou.

  22. Thank you for the feedback one and all - ALL the comments will be printed out and put into a folder for the the Events Team and Councilors to view.
Regarding the comments about the REDs being on last - I agree but it was a case of fitting in with their schedule and the fact they were doing Blackpool as well. Although the Blackpool show started later than Rhyl there was not enough time for the Reds to display here last and then get to Blackpool, land, re-fuel and take off again and get to the end of the Blackpool show in the time allowed.
Dave MCC - several of the aircraft were shared with Blackpool however the Blackpool show line up was in doubt for a long time, indeed they 'chopped' the Yakevlovs with 2 weeks to go so Rhyl then had to take on additional cost to get them to Rhyl.
Tracy - Brilliant! thats exactly what I hoped the show would be about - A Good Family Day Out!
Martin - Agree, I was dissapointed that the week before the show that more wasnt done by the Press - I cant believe that after 2009 that the forthcomming 2010 event didnt rate a comment on the front page or at least on pages 2 & 3.

If any of you locals out there know your Rhyl Town or Denbs Councilors then please speak to them and let them know your feelings about the event being a feature of 2011.

  23. WHAT A FANTASIC WEEKEND FOR US AT RHYL, THE AIRSHOW WAS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST ATTRACTION FOR RHYL IN YEARS . LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE COMING TO THIS GREAT TOWN I HAVE LIVED HERE FOR FIFTEEN YEARS AND LOVE IT, I HAD 15 FAMILY MEMBERS ARRIVING THAT WEEKEND WHICH I USED LOCAL B AND B'S AND BOOKED CARAVANS FOR THEM SO PLEASE KEEP THE SHOW GOING.

ONCE AGAIN CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL CONCERNED AND PERHAPS WE SHALL HAVE MORE HOLIDAY MAKERS NEXT YEAR COMING JUST FOR THE AIRSHOW !!!!

  24. Can I just add that the weekend was made even more enjoyable with the help of PointFm and the acts that graced the stage last weekend, oh and also the acts at the open air theatre, thanks to you all.

  25. Brilliant weekend, this was Rhyl how it used to be and how it should be, wall to wall with people. Excellent 2 days and a big improvement on last year, lets secure funding for next year, shame all the aircraft could not display but giving the age of some of them it can only be expected, a safe airshow is a good airshow.

More exhibitors should sign up for next year, food sales, air memorabilia, military goods anything related to aircraft and the such like. I am comparing it with Southport airshow and although Southport is a well established airshow even they started with a small one day display like Rhyl, from small acorns grow mighty oak tree's, and Southport prove this. Please keep the airshow going, it shows what Denbighshire Council can do with the right backing and dedicated team, well done to them.

I didn;t notice anything related to Morrisons although I believe they were some sort of sponsor. Well done to them and any other form of sponsors for helping out.

HERES LOOKING FORWARD TO RHYL AIRSHOW 2011.

  27. Had a fab weekend down at the Arena last weekend. Your show was fantastic, Despite the fact that bad weather meant some of the events had to be cancelled on the Saturday made no diffrence what so ever. My Son Robert had a blast. More events like this are needed to use the area we have there on the front Like we had when it was first built.

Again thank you so much for a great weekend x Trish

  28. Rhyl Air Show 2010 was a wonderful event. It built on the success of last year. I hope it goes from strength to strength. As a Rhyl girl it was good to see the prom busy, people enjoying being beside the sea. It is a fantastic backdrop for an Air Show.
So Rhyl Town Council, and Denbighshire - support this event - for the people of Rhyl and our visitors.
And did you see the Red Arrows. Here's to seeing them next year over the skies in Rhyl 1

    (Posted on 2010-08-12 16:25:00 by Sian G)
  29. The red arrows put on a fantastic show but I think it would have been better to have thad them at the end of the event rather than at the beginning. After seeing them everything that followed seemed a bit of an anti climax although all the events were extremely professional.

The show was absolutely great but more effort could have been made by the Council to make some money out of renting deckchairs etc. These were not readily available to the public. I saw one sign but no deckchairs!!

I sincerely hope the event will continue to be held. It was so lovely to see Rhyl alive with visitors.

  30. Brilliant day agree with other comments made would have been batter being on just one day

(Posted on 2010-08-12 13:27:00 by Samantha)
  31. What a great show, even better than last year. We spent a great day on Saturday at the arena events and even better day Sunday with a picnic on the grass by the bardic stones. nad had a fantastic view. Come on the council it MUST be on again next year. This is the sort of thing we need to encourage people back into Rhyl.
Had great difficulty in getting hold of a programme though, why? Finally got one in the Leisure centre, one of only 2 places selling them so they told me, on the Saturday morning.
Perhaps they could be put in shops etc and perhaps, on the two days, you could have people walking along the prom as far as Splash Point selling them and perhaps have sealed buckets to put donations in.
Once again, many many thanks to ALL who organised and participated.

  32. dave mcc
very good air show all praise to the organisers and participants, very well coordinated
is it not possible to work alongside another airshow on the same day as blackpool perhaps sharing the costs,
then both displays can be bigger and better and possibly save both councils some money there not to far away from each other and i dont no if this is possible to do!!!!!!!
sunday was a good day cant wait till next year when ive got a better camera haha
    regards
    dave and friends

  33. Great But should have been one day only ? the arrows where superb however now our council say it may not be on next year come on stop right there and get my town back to where it should be not waste it on stupid schemes and help to get us out of the the dump it IS....

(Posted on 2010-08-11 21:44:00 by dave gordon)
  34. Well done - absolutely brilliant air show, particularly Sunday, but well worth doing the 2 days. We spent Saturday taking the children on the rides, RAF stands etc. and Sunday on the beach with the buckets and spades, picnic and watching the fantastic display. A huge congratulations and well done to everyone involved in the organising of the event.

My suggestion to improve for next year would be - as others have suggested, more food/drink stands, more litter bins and I do think the red arrows would have been better placed as the grand finale, although I suppose this is dependent on their schedule.

With regards to the lack of funding for next year - could a small charge be an option? Even if it was £1 per person, this would make a significant impact along with a small contribution from the local businesses. I would be more than willing to pay for such a fantastic event.

(Posted on 2010-08-11 21:17:00 by Tracey)
  35. Hi,
Went to the air show thought it was great and i agree with other comments that it should be kept as 2 day's otherwise people will only come for the day and not stay in hotels or camp etc. Also if the local shops etc should sponser it and put a little bit of cah towards it to help the council, it would be ashame to loose it after 2 good years and it could get bigger and better well done to all invovled and lets hope for better coverage next year

(Posted on 2010-08-11 18:55:00 by paul)
  36. Me and my family had a fanatastic time on the Sunday it was simply brilliant. This event needs more advertising as we only found out through word of mouth and we live in Preatatyn. Please keep this event going it can only get bigger and who knows where it could lead. Well done on putting on such a great event.

Just need more stands. The cadets were great but need more things on to browse and more importantly spend our money :)

  37. Hi, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the airshow on both days and congratulations to everyone who organised it. The displays were fantastic, real heart in mouth stuff. I hope it'll be on again next year. In fact, I'd come again even if I had to pay for tickets!! It's great to see that Rhyl can put on such a good show and I will remember last weekend for a very long time. Thanks again. X

  38. Enjoyed the show, well done to all, especially the Sunday, Saturday was a little hit and miss however easy to understand the potential problems, weather, old aircraft, emergencys etc.. I think it should be 2 days, more exhibits, old buses, old cars, motorbikes, more military vehicles. Thanks should be given to those who volunteered their unpaid services, they did a great job.
A couple of comments, more of them and greater variety of food booths (queues horrendous at the few around) and website slow to be updated,.
Interesting that neither of the local papers for the week mentioned the coming show, while quick to cast doubts on its continuance after it had happened.

(Posted on 2010-08-11 13:13:00 by Martin)
  39. What a fantastic display. Watched last years show and thought it would be hard to better it. This years was so much better. From the moment the Red Arrows flew over bang on the dot at 2.00 pm. it was non stop excitement. With the finale of the RAF parachuters and the will they won't they be able to land tension.

Saturday was a bit dissapointing but that's the luck of the draw with our weather and it was still enjoyable.

Hope the event will be able to continue although I really don't think this year could be improved on. Lets hope this becomes an annual fixture for Rhyl as it is just the type of event to bring in the crowds.

    Regards Lynda.

  40. Thanks to all concerned for another great airshow. The flying displays were brilliant keep up the good work, and lets make sure we have it every year.

(Posted on 2010-08-11 08:25:00 by steve jones)
  41. Many thanks for all the comments - please keep them comming!

Bill, thanks for the ideas, if I can reply as follows. Agree with you that after 2 successful years we could do with some feedback from the businesses and shopkeepers of the area. It has to be appreciated that to develop this event even a little bit more then we need their support as well - Morrisons stepped up to the plate this year and should be applauded for this.
I too thought a one day event was the way to go however although they had issues with the Saturday which does need looking at I have had feedback from 2 hotels who had people booking for the weekend and the week so that they could get to the air show and see he area, if it was a one day event then they apparently said it would of just been day visit. A valid point we need to bare in mind.
I got the local MVT guys to come down this year, the interest in their vehicles was tremendous and they are looking at how they might develop their role at any future event. With regard to a mock battle - Im afraid that with the armed forces in the state they are we couldnt even get the local TA to come from Prestayn with kit and vehicles "due to staff shortages". I hope that the army side of the event could be developed but we do need someone from their side to talk to us.
I have been reluctant to involve the SAR helicopter guys as after discussions with the lifeboat section that due to them being on call to cover mountain and sea rescues we would be lucky to get them on a 1 in 5 basis. I did not want to disapoint the crowd with a Sunday no-show. You may not be aware that they were coming Saturday to replace the cancellation of the Hawk display but hey guess what - they were called to an emergency and were a no show!
We co-ordinated with Blackpool (as was suggested last year!) as we were able to off set costs with the non RAF teams & pilots - it saved us a significant amount of money. Be aware that Blackpool started the year looking at a 12 item display and ended up with a couple of key items, some shared stuff with us and some padding.
Like the idea of the Beluga however they are a civil airline and still have to get CAA permission to carry out such an event, also they rarely fly at weekends and we cannot afford to pay for a specific flight.
Please keep the ideas comming though, perhaps you'd like to trade ideas over a mug of tea one evening? Happy to meet you.
Finally, totally agree re your comment on the free loader who wont pay to see the Cosford show from inside - all the profits go to the RAF Charity as well.

Regarding peoples suggestions about other aircraft. The RAF have a limited number of aircraft and most are further limited on the number of events they can do. They are not available every weekend either and we have to apply to the RAF office at Cranwell in good time eg October for next year. These aircraft, unless specifically sponsored by the RAF all cost money to appear at displays.
Another aircraft that people suggest is the lovely Vulcan, the only problem is that to have that specifically is a big 5 figure sum (!) it is possible to get that reduced if you can combine that with other airshows but you are still looking at a high end 4 figure sum - even Blackpool couldnt manage it this year.

Very pleased to hear that families enjoyed the event as that was one of my goals when looking at which aircraft to book, it was so good to see families settling down to watch with picnics and enjoying themselves.

Everyone who attended should be very proud as the Police informed me today that there were zero recorded incidents for the event on Sunday - brilliant!!

I'll try and answer other queries when I can
    Regards
    Phil FDD

  42. air show was superb , please bring it back next year !!!! the red arrows and the falcon parachute displays were a vision to watch :-)

  43. We had a fantastic time at the Airshow, it was the first time we've been but would definetely return next year. The Red Arrows were incredible as were the RAF Falcons who were well worth waiting for. I can't believe that there is doubt over whether there should be funding for the Airshow next year. The thousands of people who flocked to the coast just for the show proved that this event is an absolutely brilliant way of bringing tourists here and giving local people something to be proud of.

(Posted on 2010-08-10 21:40:00 by Jane)
  44. Ok now for the constructive ideas for next year if you have a budget.Never seen Rhyl so busy in years so the shops and traders banked a wad of extra cash, all the traders in Rhyl should now give a tiny bit out of there extra income to the 2011 Airshow fund after all they gained so if they want the extra next year it will not hurt them.

Make it a one day show with a bigger flying programme, you will benefit in the end.

More ground attractions perhaps with the mock battles the Army use to put on on the beach when I was little.

Rescue 22/Lifeboat joint excercise to be included.

Time the event correctly as Blackpool Air Show was also on that day and I think Woodford was on Saturday as well, that way you have a bigger chance of extra aircraft available.

Airbus have enough employees living in the Rhyl area,a low level fly pass by the Beluga wing carrier would thrill the crowds.

And the sad person who would rather sit on the A41 at Cosford, pay the entrance fee you tight miserable old git

  45. Once again i read in the local paper that next years Air show might not be able to run due to cuts. The one thing that brings in more people in a couple of days and helps the local economy.
Come on D.C.C. do not spoil what you have created. Well done to all who gave there time and effort for free. Look forward to 2011. Great event for Rhyl.

  48. A little disappointed on Saturday due to the gaps between the planned flights but Sunday certainly made up for it. Great afternoon despite the weather not being perfect.
The inshore lifeboat being launched to move a motor boat and having to eventually chase it away was an extra bit of excitement and maybe a display involving the life boats could be included next year.
One small complaint was that with the number of people, particularly on Sunday there could have been more food and drink stalls as the queues were excessive at times.
    Looking forward to next year

  49. There are many things that govern the success or otherwise of any flying activity. It is very easy to throw bricks at the organisers without realising the hoops that have to be jumped through before the event reaches the final planning stage.
It literally takes months of planning, scrounging, coercion etc to assemble the necessary team to make the two days run. Many people do all of this in their spare time and are often unpaid, giving their professional expertise, experience and time for free. The knockers should try volunteering - it may give them a different perspective on life.
Many people condemn our youth. The Cadets of Rhyl Squadron ATC are acredit to the ATC, their Squadron and most of all, to themselves. Well done to all involved. I hope the CC value their imput and organisational skills.
    Looking forward to 2011!

  51. Just returned to Birmingham after a weekend at Rhyl. WOW it was fantastic the red arrows are awsome,We spent the day at the amphitheatre (i think) and we were entertained by the Goerge Formby society,a Magician and a Grandfather/Grandson duo who gave a rendition of the Everly Brothers classics plus other classics as good as the originals,How come these guys arn't famous, Fantastic hope its on again next year.RHYL you have got something here more please.

  52. After spending the morning doing my breakfast radio show for Point FM on the Saturday and plugging the air show I was slighly disappointed due to the weather and aircrafts being cancelled, but the sunday show made up for this, it was fan-bloody-tastic, I've not seen the Red Arrows close up like that since I was 4 years old at RAF Valley, also as a local I can't remember the last time I spent a full day at the events arena/prom and I've not seen crowds there like that since the Radio 1 roadshow. Well done to everyone involved a pat on the back is well deserved to all, heres hoping for a show in 2011

  53. Actually in response to the posters below ......saturday was never billed as an airshow.....look at the front page of the website..........FLYPASTS and ground displays....it does help if you actually read whats written guys....then you have less to moan about .....and its free as well...give me strength......i notice some of the 'few' moaners that have posted are the same negative bunch from last year ......if you`r that bothered...then instead of whining...get off your butts ...get hold of the events team and kindly volunteer your services to assist in making 2011 bigger and better than this years...
rant over.....to all the DCC RTC RAF ATC POINT FM and other organisations that actually worked for months to bring a weekend that attracted around 100,000 visitors to Rhyl over the two days, congrats job well done and i know that 95% of the people mentioned above (even the RAF) were giving their time on a volunteer basis at the weekend.....
for those posters with the praising comments and the negative (but) constructive comments a very big thank you ......please keep them coming .....use this page as the way to show the council the support that is there for another show in 2011

  54. Just read that the airshow next year might be in doubt due to spending cuts. This would be a grave mistake. To attract 60 odd thousand people to a one/two day event is wonderful, and brings tourism to the area. The Red Arrows are worth the trip alone. What a fantastic display from them. Congratulations to all concerned in the planning of this event, and a word to those who could even think of cancelling shows in the future. DON'T!!

  55. Sunday Air Show Red Arrows Brill as expected but the lack of other aircraft made it pour were as last year was a great show but with the loss of the Battle of Britain Flight left a big hole too many big gaps between what aircraft you did have

  56. saturday should never happen again make it a 1 day show!!! would work much better and attract more people!!! RED BULL AIR race for rhyl!!!!!!!! its a must!

  57. Well what can i saw ? went to the air show on saturday and all i can say it was a mess!! first flight 1220????? yep sure almost 2pm the guy on the loud speaker system did not no if he was comming or going or been and gone, someone somewhere could not run a drink in a brewery,
infuture i will sit on the side of the road on the A41 cosford just outside wolverhampton and watch a proppppppper air show for free, i can't risk Rhyl again... must say the first guy on saturday was very good, as for sunday i sat and watched the reds from the comfort of my caravan in Towyn.

  58. Saw the event last year and again visited the event with much anticipation. A great day was had by all my family. Red Arrows FAB! But the variety of programme was good too. Constructive criticism- speakers set on sand pointing back to crowd,?Could not hear a thing on the steps where we were based near the lifeboat station and would like to have heard the commentary.
Also some portable loos set up along the front- a long way to go to find loos for little kids and remember the 40p!!
New attractions of Chinook etc were great.
Overall a whole day out for the family, great beach, fantastic air display and free- who can beat that these days?
Good luck improving this again for next year we are already looking forward to it!!

  59. Thanks for another geat airshow. We loved it last year and for this year to be over 2 days made it even better. Shame that Saturdays events were slightly spoiled by the weather but Sunday made up for it. The Red Arrows were as ever, superb and the tension over will they, won't they building up to the Falcons parachuting actually made it more exciting.
For those who didn't see or hear it, the Lancaster Bomber on Saturday evening was amazing. I think the commentator was right when he said "I don't think there is a dry eye in the house". The same could be said of the Spitfire too on the Sunday. I actually did see an elderley man wiping his tears away.
Well done to everyone, and to all the petty moaners, just ask yourself "How much did you pay to watch it?"
Here's looking forward hopefully to next year.
    Many Thanks Rhyl.

  60. What can i say, we spent three days in ryhyl at golden sands and was over joyed when we found out about the air show, the red arrows were out of this worls what a sight to see, we should all be soooo proud of them all, i got so excited watching them it was fantastic, and the other air crafts of cousrse were great to see.....
It would be great to see them again next year and will be watching out for where they are next....
Thank you all for making our weekend memorable.....

  62. The airshow was absolutely brilliant. My son Patrick was amazed by the Red Arrows (this was his first airshow, he's never been bothered before). The wing walkers were fantastic as were the other acrobatic displays and the parachutists were a brilliant way to end the day. My only real complaint is that we had come prepared with all our bits and pieces (tea, coffee ect.) and had found a place to enjoy the show well within the blue and white boundary tape and then when it was time for the parachutists we were asked to move about twenty feet by a very polite ATC cadet, which we did. No sooner did we get settled when we were asked to move again, now it was the turn of the police and their brilliant skill at treating people like a herd of sheep and expecting to move blindly up the steps when they were already full (they obviously get their traning in football stadiums) why could not one single member of the police see that they needed to get some officers to move people off the steps first. Of course i fully understand the reason to ask people to move but not their method. Pehaps next year it might be a good idea to cordon off a larger area of the beach in order to allow for greater safety. BUT IT WAS WORTH SEEING, ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU FOR A BRILLIANT SHOW.

  66. A fantastic day, my family and I went to the Rhyl Air Show on Sunday and thought it was brilliant!! The 'Red Arrows' were superb, the 'Wing Walkers' stunts were breathtaking, and the 'Parachuters' gave me goose-pimples.! All in all they were well worthy of the title "Those magnificent men in their flying machines'!! Brilliantly organised, commentry was funny and informative can't wait until next year thank you to all who contributed to this wonderfull family day out.Bernadette and Alan Williams Pen-y-Ffordd Holywell.

  67. could only get to the sunday show, fantastic display again by the team of organisers. few points to make, the advertising for the show was minimal i didnt know what was on the itinery therefore a bit lost on the day. the other is red arrows last, unless you have something to top them( hard to do) but big well done to all

  69. Brief reply to PhilW, although this is not really the forum for scoring points, more for collecting comments! You were the flying director? No problems with your input; excellent programme, although I have doubts about whether it was sustainable to plan a 2 day fly event>
I actually referred to the person(s) in overall charge of the whole event? DCC? It seemed to me that it was a collection of individual events, I've only just found out what was actually on along the prom over the weekend; advertising was minimal; little press coverage (try searching the local newspaper websites or even BBC Wales!).
I don't want to be labelled as a Victor Meldrew, just trying to make constructive criticism. I'm a Rhyl boy through and through and will take up your invitation to contact web designer through ATC, thank you.
I just hope that DCC do a proper debrief and aim for excellence next year.
To conclude, a fabulous weekend! :)

  73. Hi Guys,
What a great event. We come from Carlisle. We were on holiday in the area and heard of it through freinds. Couple of constructive comments:- Advertising of the event seemed a bit weak, the otherwise excellent programme needed events in the Arena and Drift Park listing. We found a lovely spot, I think called the Amphitheatre, where we enjoyed the afternoon. From start to finish there was useful comment, and advance warning of air events, great entertainment and lots of fun. Our kids were thrilled to find a "real live magician", we loved the George Formby Band and a Grandad and Grandson vocal duo. Non stop fun and light entertainment reminded us oldies of end of pier entertainment. Rhyl sometimes has a bad press but we have fallen in love all over again with the place.
Final thought why not have some of the old time entertainment in the main arena, friends who went there said it wasnt half the fun of what we experienced. Well donr Rhyl, we will be here next year.

(Posted on 2010-08-09 09:33:00 by Ben Jeffries)
  74. Tom Simkins..........jog on will you

'Something does need to be done on the ground'..........did you not see the awesome display in the events arena by the RAF?

Get some perspective, this is Rhyl not Fairford!

Well done to DCC, RTC, Rhyl ATC and our boys in blue. Excellent

  76. Congratulations and a big thank you to all who organised this event. We had a wonderful couple of days and it was fantastic to see so many people enjoying what Rhyl has to offer. As always the Red Arrows were amazing. This event MUST go ahead next year.

  78. Hi, just wanted to pass on my thanks for a great couple of days; the kids enjoyed the events area activities and we all enjoyed the flying displays. Only comment - we were halfway to Splashpoint and a lot of the air displays didn't get to that end and we could not hear any of the commentary. BUT we still had a great time.

Best: It's hard to choose between the Red Arrows and the Lancaster which made some passes over our beach cricket game on Saturday.

Hopefully see you in 2011, again Thank you.

  84. I would like to say that the airshow was a tremendous boost for Rhyl in showing what it can offer to people of this country. Could you get this in Ibiza, Turkey, or the US for free? I doubt it very much. As a resident of this town, it was nice to see so many faces on our beaches enjoying the spectacle before them. Even though the typical British weather did not help on Saturday, Sundays show more than made up for it. This was a great reminder of the true spirit of the British forces who are there to support our freedom. Well done to the oranisers for the show, well done to the cadets of the different groups for their support. This was truly an amazing feat, one which will be hard to beat next year.

(Posted on 2010-08-09 12:38:00 by Graham)
  85. I have travelled 117 miles up to Rhyl from Cardiff to see the Rhyl Air Show.
I thought it was a fantastic weekend and worth travelling all that distance to view the spectacular show from the Red Arrows and all the other fly overs.

I was amazed at how many people there were at the events, it was lovely to see that Rhyl is on the up with such activities.

I can say I shall be making the journey next year to see the next Air Show.
I just want to say a big Well done to all the Cadets and all those involved in the event activities it was a brilliant .

Well Done to Gareth Culley the photo's were amazing and organising such a brilliant event and spending your spare time in trying to get things finalised.

See you again next year Rhyl and looking forward to another fantastic event.

  86. Many thanks for all your comments - hopefully the exciting flying displays today manged to help those who attended Saturday feel a bit better.
From my perspective Im glad that so many of you enjoyed the flying displays and as last year the comments on this web page will be collected together and sent on to the Council for review. We need to see what the reaction is from you the spectators so that the fund holders can see if its viable to continue the event for 2011 especially in these challanging times.
I would like to thank the RAF for their support of this years event - there were only 3 display assets available from the RAF this weekend and we had two of them.
I would also like to thank Morrisons for their support of this years event and hope that they will consider being able to support a 2011 event should it be given the go ahead.

I note a comment from a KEITH, many of the people involved today were unpaid volunteers all keen to make the event a success. With regard to the web site, I and the Council are very gratefull to the Air Cadets for the excellent site which over the months has required more than just the occasional update, I also know that the person involved has given MANY hours of unpaid support to this years event especially from the Friday and did require some time to grab of few hours sleep. I can only speak for the Sunday event and can assure you that I have sufficiant knowlege and authority to run the flying program thank you. Please could you clarify your statement of 'missing documentaion with 2 days to go' please, I know I had all the CAA paperwork in place with weeks to go. I make note of your comment to assist in a future event so please contact 1340 ATC Sqdn with your details and I will collect them.

Re Bill Jones - is this Mr Jones of Rhuddlan of last year? If it is then I draw your attention to the Southport budget which is some 20-25 times what DCC are able to put forward at this point in time and you are charged to see the event. I seem to remember asking you last year if you would like to volunteer your time to assist the Rhyl Event Team, did you?

Ive had a long day and Im now off to bed!! Regards to all,
Phil - Sundays Flying Display Director

Well done to all that were involved in organising and running the event.
This is just what Rhyl needs. Something to get the crowds back, and keep people entertained.
Loved the Arrows, and the Spitfire.

  94. My family and I have just returned from a wonderful day at the Air Show. For a completely free event I was very impressed with all that there was available to see. During these difficult times when such pressure is placed on our military personnel and equipment it was wonderful to see such a turnout. We must not forget the RAF are not here just to entertain us at weekends,
I believe many of the personnel gave up their weekends to man the displays, and they will all be back at their posts tomorrow. Well done to all the RAF organisers, and let us hope you will return in 2011

  100. The family had a fantastic day!! even better than last year.
A few food stalls and more amusements for the kiddies would be great for next yr so we could spend the whole day there.
I would love to see the events arena used much more, such as food and craft markets during the summer,
overall a fabulous weekend had by all.
